The synthesis and preparation of 12 chromogenic polymers used to build an intelligent label for security paper applications are described. The process involves coating paper sheets with the polymers. Depending on the number of different polymers used in a combinatory way, a maximum of 1212 combinations is possible, thus creating a matrix that is practically impossible to counterfeit. Currently, most anticounterfeiting proposals for paper-based packaging and documents involve some sort of verification under ultraviolet radiation, and the requirement of additional equipment often relegates the end-user to a passive role. In contrast, in our approach, the combination of sensory polymers in an array gives rise to an invisible label, i.e., an owner cryptographic key, which becomes visible upon scattering a nitrite solution (e.g., spraying or using an impregnated foam roller) over the printed label on the security paper. For this purpose, a monomer containing an aromatic primary amino group and another with an activated aromatic ring are covalently bonded to a polymer with high affinity toward paper, consisting essentially of units of methyl methacrylate and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. Subsequently, the paper samples are coated with the resulting sensory chromogenic polymer. By spraying, painting, or staining an aqueous acid solution of NaNO2 (at least 1.20 g/L) and the chromogenic polymers, a well-defined color appears, because of the formation of an azo compound. This process provides users with a quick and facile authentication method without additional equipment and without affecting paper strength., S.V. received funding from “La Caixa” Foundation (Grant No. LCF/PR/PR18/51130007). We have faced the preparation of fully water-soluble fluorescent peptide substrate with long-term environmental stability (in solution more than 35 weeks) and, accordingly, with stable results in the use of this probe in determining the activity of enzymes. We have achieved this goal by preparing a co-polymer of the commercial N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (99.5% mol) and a fluorescent substrate for trypsin activity determination having a vinylic group (0.5%). The activity of trypsin has been measured in water solutions of this polymer over time, contrasted against the activity of both the commercial substrate Z-L-Arg-7-amido-4-methylcoumarin hydrochloride and its monomeric derivative, prepared ad-hoc. Initially, the activity of the sensory polymer was 74.53 ± 1.72 nmol/min/mg of enzyme, while that of the commercial substrate was 20.44 ± 0.65 nmol/min/mg of enzyme, the former maintained stable along weeks and the latter with a deep decay to zero in three weeks. The ‘protection’ effect exerted by the polymer chain has been studied by solvation studies by UV–Vis spectroscopy, steady-state & time resolved fluorescence, thermogravimetry and isothermal titration calorimetry., "La Caixa" Foundation, under agreement LCF/PR/PR18/51130007. We have developed an in situ methodology for determining nitrite concentration in processed meats that can also be used by unskilled personnel. It is based on a colorimetric film-shaped sensory polymer that changes its color upon contacting the meat and a mobile app that automatically calculates the manufacturing and residual nitrite concentration by only taking digital photographs of sensory films and analyzing digital color parameters. The film-shaped polymer sensor detects nitrite anions by an azo-coupling reaction, since they activate this reaction between two of the four monomers that the copolymer is based on. The sensory polymer is complemented with an app, which analyzes the color in two different digital color spaces (RGB and HSV) and performs a set of 32 data fittings representing the concentration of nitrite versus eight different variables, finally providing the nitrite concentration of the test samples using the best fitting curve. The calculated concentration of nitrite correlates with a validated method (ISO 2918: 1975) usually used to determine nitrite, and no statistically significant difference between these methods and our proposed one has been found in our study (26 meat samples, 8 prepared, and 18 commercial). Our method represents a great advance in terms of analysis time, simplicity, and orientation to use by average citizens., The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. We report on an innovative method to measure the Zn(II) concentration in commercial pet food samples, both wet and dry food. It is based on a colorimetric sensory polymer prepared from commercial monomers and 0.5 % of a synthetic monomer having a quinoline sensory core (N-(8-(2-azidoacetamido)quinolin-5-yl)methacrylamide). We obtained the sensory polymer as crosslinked films by thermally initiated bulk radical polymerization of the monomers of 100 μm thickness, which we punched into Ø6 mm sensory discs. The immersion of the discs in water solutions containing Zn(II) turned the fluorescence on, allowing for the titration of this cation using the G parameter of a digital picture taken to the discs. The limits of detection and quantification were 29 and 87 µg/L, respectively. Furthermore, we measured the concentration of Zn(II) even in the presence of other cations, detecting no significant interferences. Thus, in a further step, we obtained the concentration of Zn(II) from 15 commercial pet food samples, ranging from 19 to 198 mg/kg, following a simple extraction procedure and contacting the extractant with our sensory discs. These results were contrasted with that obtained by ICP-MS as a reference method., Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación (State Research Agency) (grant PID2020-113264RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033).

Glucose oxidase (GOX) and catalase (CAT) regulate the amount of H2O2 in honey, by generating or consuming it, so they are related to the antibacterial and antioxidant activity of honey. However, their activities are hardly analysed, since the process requires a previous dialysis that is non-selective, very time-consuming (>24 h), eco-unfriendly (>6L of buffer) and expensive. This research shows the design and performance of a material that selectively removes the actual interferents. The film-shaped-polymer is immersed for 90́ within a honey solution (12.5 mL of buffer), where it interacts exclusively with 1,2-dihydroxybenzenes, which we proved to be the real interferents (the material contains motifs derived from phenylboronic acid to interact with 1,2-diols). Polymeric chains favour condensation to occur exclusively with 1,2-dihydroxybenzenes, excluding monosaccharides. The interferents’ removal using our designed polymer is selective, low cost (1.42€ per test), rapid and eco-friendly (saves 6L of buffer and 20.5 h of experimental workout per sample)., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. The initial stages of the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 showed that early detection of the virus in a simple way is the best tool until the development of vaccines. Many different tests are invasive or need the patient to cough up or even drag a sample of mucus from the throat area. Besides, the manufacturing time has proven insufficient in pandemic conditions since they were out of stock in many countries. Here we show a new method of manufacturing virus sensors and a proof of concept with SARS-CoV-2. We found that a fluorogenic peptide substrate of the main protease of the virus (Mpro) can be covalently immobilized in a polymer, with which a cellulose-based material can be coated. These sensory labels fluoresce with a single saliva sample of a positive COVID-19 patient. The results matched with that of the antigen tests in 22 of 26 studied cases (85% success rate)., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. A large number of annual cases of diseases and deaths related to spoiled or contaminated food,
and the amount of food waste are a matter of socio-economic impact, highlighting the need for
a fast, easy, cheap, available, and real-time determination of food quality and safety. To ensure
this, physical and chemical food quality indicators such as humidity, temperature, gases, pH,
microorganisms, pesticides, etc., should be controlled and monitored during production,
transportation, storage, and consumption. In this sense, smart polymers are raised as useful
tools to facilitate this task. These polymers are sensitive to variations in the microenvironment,
modifying their properties and/or generating a response that can be measured. Due to their
versatility, these materials can be part of the food packaging to inform the consumers or be
used as a measuring tool to determine the state of the food. This chapter envisaged the concept
of smart polymers, the types, and their main applications for determining food quality and
ensuring food and beverage safety., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by FEDER (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional), the Spanish AEI (State Research Agency, PID2020-113264RBI00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and PID2019-108583RJI00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), and "La Caixa" Foundation (under agreement LCF/PR/PR18/51130007). There is a strong need to reduce food waste while maintaining the quality of packaged food. Thus, we have
prepared a new fully organic and metal-free antimicrobial polymer, with the aim of increasing both the shelf life
and safety of packaged meat. This antimicrobial polymer is based on widely available commercial acrylic
monomers with covalently linked vanillin motifs, which are naturally occurring essential oils with antimicrobial
characteristics. The film-shaped antibacterial polymeric material shows antibacterial activity for Escherichia coli,
Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes with an R parameter of up to 3.18, 3.37 and 2.00 and inhibition
% of up to 99.95%, 99.96%, and 99.02%, respectively. To show the potential of these materials, we conducted a
proof of concept experiment in which the antimicrobial polymer film was used as an absorbent food pad. The
results show that the use of the antimicrobial polymer film can increase the shelf life of a packaged meat product
by 50%. Since the antimicrobial activity is based on a covalently anchored group, there is no antimicrobial agent
diffusion, and the antimicrobial activity persists beyond the first use because it is easily washable and reusable
for at least 10 cycles., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by FEDER (Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional), the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigacion ´ (PID2020–113264RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/50110001 1033) and "La Caixa" Foundation (the project leading to these results has received funding from the "La Caixa" Foundation, under agreement LCF/ PR/PR18/51130007).

Quality control in the food industry is of the upmost importance from the food safety, organoleptic and commercial viewpoints. Accordingly, the development of in situ, rapid, and costless analytical tools is a valuable task in which we are working. Regarding this point, the copper content of grape must has to be determined by wineries along the wine production process. For this purpose, grape must samples are sent to laboratories where the copper content is measured usually by flame atomic absorption spectrometry or by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. We herein propose a straightforward, rapid, and inexpensive methodology based both on a film-shaped colorimetric polymer sensor and a smartphone method that at the same time can be used by unskilled personnel. The sensory polymer films change their color upon dipping them on the grape must, and the color evolution is analyzed using the digital color parameters of a picture taken to the film with a smartphone. Furthermore, the analytical procedure is automatically carried out by a smartphone app. The limit of detection of copper of the polymer sensor is 0.08 ppm. Following this approach, 18 production samples coming from the French Groupe ICV company were studied. The copper content of the samples was analyzed by the usual procedure carried out by the company (flame atomic absorption spectrometry) and by the method proposed in this work, ranging this content from 0.41 to 6.08 ppm. The statistical study showed that the results of both methods are fully consistent, showing the validity of the proposed method for the determination of copper in grape must within the frame of wine production wineries and industries., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. We focused on developing polyurethane (PU) adhesives with superior ambient thermal and hydrolytic stability, a crucial factor for industrial productivity. Our approach involved creating PU prepolymers that can withstand varying temperatures in ambient conditions. These prepolymers consist of conventional isocyanate-terminated polyurethane and metal-free acid:base organic catalysts, with the stability of the adhesive relying on the organocatalyst employed. We tested a series of 11 latent organocatalysts derived from the reaction between 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) and various acids. Among these, the catalyst based on 1-naphthoic acid exhibited exceptional stability, lasting at least 3 h at 60 ◦C and an average relative humidity of 65% under vigorous stirring. We assessed this stability using a fan-based stirrer and analyzed the curing conditions kinetically through DSC. Furthermore, our adhesive formulation is environmentally friendly as it is free of metals, specifically tin (typically present in catalysts such as dibutyltin dilaurate). This quality enhances its sustainability. To validate the practical applicability of the adhesives, we conducted tests using decorative facade models composed of siliciclastic sandstone extracted from a quarry in Vilviestre del Pinar (Burgos, Spain. Latitude: 41.951024◦N, longitude: 3.078283◦W) and extruded polystyrene (XPS). The results demonstrated the excellent hydrolytic and thermal stability of the adhesives, highlighting their significant potential for panel manufacturing in this context., This work was supported by the Regional Government of Castilla y León (Junta de Castilla y León) and by the Ministry of Science and Innovation MICIN and the European Union NextGeneration EU PRTR. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of a highly manageable polyacrylic film material for enzyme immobilization, using β-galactosidase (β-gal) as a model enzyme. The material is based on commercially available monomers and achieves efficient immobilization of β-gal through the formation of azo linkages between amino styrene groups in the polyacrylic material and the enzyme. The immobilized enzyme demonstrates superior performance compared to free enzyme in lactose hydrolysis of UHT milk, achieving lactose concentrations below 0.1% (<1 mg/mL), indicating its potential for lactose hydrolysis in dairy products. The film-shaped material is designed for easy submersion and removal, similar to a smart card, and offers reusability, with the ability to be reused at least 10 times without loss of enzymatic activity. Characterization of the immobilized enzyme on the polymeric material was performed using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Raman spectroscopy. Protein release studies confirmed the stability of the immobilized enzyme during prolonged incubation in aqueous solution without significant enzyme leakage. Overall, the polyacrylic film material demonstrates promise as a simple and efficient approach for enzyme immobilization, with potential applications in various industries, including the food industry., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. Water pollution from industrial or household waste, containing dyes from the textile industry, poses a significant environmental challenge requiring immediate attention. In this study, we have developed a crosslinked-smart-polymer film based on 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate copolymerized with other hydrophilic and hydrophobic commercial monomers, and its efficacy in removing 21 different textile dyes was assessed. The smart polymer effectively interacts with and adsorbs dyes, inducing a noticeable colour change. UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis confirmed a removal efficiency exceeding 90 % for anionic dyes, with external diffusion identified as the primary influencing factor on process kinetics, consistent with both pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Crank-Dual model. Isothermal studies revealed distinct adsorption behaviors, with indigo carmine adhering to a Freundlich isotherm while others conformed to the Langmuir model. Permeation and fluorescence analyses corroborated isotherm observations, verifying surface adsorption. Significantly, our proof-of-concept demonstrated the resilience of the smart-film to common fabric softeners and detergents without compromising adsorption capacity. Additionally, the material exhibited reusability (for at least 5 cycles), durability, and good thermal and mechanical properties, with T5 and T10 values of 265 °C and 342 °C, respectively, a Tg of 168 °C, and a water swelling percentage of 54.3 %, thus confirming its stability and suitability for industrial application., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. Betalains in beetroots offer notable colouring properties and health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and antitumorous activities. However, they degrade due to processing and storage conditions like temperature, pH, oxygen, and light-exposure. Traditional betalain determination methods are resource-intensive solid-liquid extractions. This study proposes a novel approach using a smart polymer to rapidly quantify betalains in processed beetroots. The polymer, containing N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, selectively interacts with compounds like betalains. Characterization shows thermal stability over 250 °C and suitable mechanical properties. The film changes to colour upon interaction with betalains, allowing quantification via smartphone. The sensory polymer's efficacy was validated across 27 beetroot samples, showing no significant differences compared to traditional methods. Combining the smart polymer with a colour analysis app, “Colorimetric Titration,” provides a robust and efficient means of quantifying total betalains in beetroot puree, reducing the quantification time from 180 to 90 min, promising implications for routine food industry quality assessments., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. Six PU adhesives were synthesised with two different polyols (PPG and PEG based) of three molecular weights, namely 400, 1000 and 2000 g mol−1, and MDI, to prepare sandstone-XPS isolating façade panels. The chemical structure, thermal properties, and adhesion properties in the preparation of the panels were evaluated. Both sandstone and XPS are commonly used materials in construction due to their excellent insulating properties, durability, flexibility, water resistance, and aesthetic appeal, making them environmentally attractive. The industry trend is towards using sanded XPS in these panels, as better adhesion is achieved with typical adhesives compared to satin or unsanded XPS. However, this entails waste generation from sanding, a higher panel price and a difference in adhesive consumption from 309 g m−2 to 684 g m−2 for unsanded (or satin) and sanded XPS, respectively. In this study, all prepared panels exhibit good adhesion properties, even those made with satin XPS. Panels prepared from PPG-based adhesives show better adhesion performance than those made from PEG, reaching 0.52 ± 0.07 N mm−2 with the 1000 g mol−1 PPG polyol-based adhesive. These highest adhesion properties are due to the optimal balance of flexible and rigid segments in the polymer material structure. The adhesive maintains its high performance even after harsh temperature and humidity conditions. After accelerated ageing with heat, cold and water, the probes retain between 65 and 71 % of the original tensile strength (0.34 ± 0.03, 0.35 ± 0.07 and 0.37 ± 0.01 N mm−2, respectively). This finding suggests an interesting starting point for cost savings associated with sanding and reduction in XPS waste generation, making them economically and environmentally appealing., We gratefully acknowledge the financial support provided by all funders. Legionella pneumophila is a significant public health threat, responsible for severe diseases such as Legionnaires’ disease. Traditional detection methods are often labour-intensive, time-consuming, and require sophisticated equipment. This study introduces smart fluorogenic polymeric materials for the naked-eye detection of L. pneumophila via protease activity. These materials, prepared as hydrophilic films, cellulose-coated linear copolymers, and electrospun nanofibers, operate on an OFF/ON FRET system, emitting fluorescence under UV light upon interaction with L. pneumophila proteases. Characterisation confirmed the successful immobilisation of the peptide substrate and its response to proteases. The sensors showed moderate to high sensitivity and specificity, with detection limits of 2.91 × 105, 3.64 × 10⁵, and 4.04 × 105 CFUs/mL for the film, copolymer, and nanofiber formats, respectively. Cross-reactivity tests identified only Pseudomonas aeruginosa as an interferent. This novel approach offers rapid, simple, and cost-effective L. pneumophila detection with visible results under UV light, suitable for clinical and environmental samples. It highlights the potential for broader pathogen detection applications., Agradecemos el apoyo financiero brindado por todos los financiadores.
